Obituary for Samuel Walter George Jr.

Samuel Walter George Jr., 94 of Colonial Heights, passed away June 14, 2017. He was born in Petersburg, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Walter George Sr., and May Perkins George and two sisters, Myrtle George Firebaugh, LTC Delma George. Mr. George graduated from Hopewell High School and attended Randolph Macon College until he enlisted in the United States Army 1943. He served in WWII., in the ETO, 3rd Army. He was president of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge and Richmond Howitzers, 176th FA BN. Mr. George was also a member of the American Legion Post 284 the Veterans for Foreign Wars, Post 2239 and the Sons of Confederate Veterans Post 167. He was an active member of Highland United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for many years, taught the E. McAllister Men’s Bible Class and was a member of the United Methodist Men’s Unit. Mr. George retired from Dominion Resources in May of 1984 where he was Director of Safety. He was a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and served as chairman and member of the Executive Committee of the American Society for Testing materials. Mr. George is survived by his wife, Joyce Phillips George; two sons, David Walter George and Mark Joseph George of Virginia Beach; grandson, Michael David George and wife, Angel George; great-grandchildren, Charlotte Avalon George and Cailey Joyce George of Richmond, Edward Walter George and wife Jenna, great-grandchildren, Kady George, Avery George and Wyatt George of Shelby, North Carolina, David Walter George Jr., of Belmont, North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 19, 2017 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Dr. Dorothy O’Quinn and the Reverend Linwood Daniel officiating. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery Petersburg, Virginia. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 18, 2017 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
